The Centre for Environmental Management and Control (CEMAC), University of Nigeria was established in 2004 for the purpose of promoting educational advancement and pursuit of academic excellence in the area of environmental management and control through research, teaching, and consultancy in environmental studies and projects. In 2014, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) donated a complex to the centre and it became known as UNN-Shell Centre for Environmental Management and Control (UNN-Shell CEMAC). SPDC also endowed an NNPC/SPDC JV Professorial Chair in Environmental Management & Control.

The pioneer Director of the Centre was Prof. C. B Chukwuali, followed by Prof. K. C Ogboi (as acting Director) and Prof. Christian N. Madu. The current Director, since September 2019, is Prof. Anene N. Moneke.

MISSION

To be an interdisciplinary environmental research and education Centre that provides leadership in environmental research, environmental remediation, assessment/management, sustainable development systems and energy systems to industries and local communities while creating educational opportunities for future engineers, scientists and policy makers.

GOALS
To conduct interdisciplinary research on contemporary environmental issues; monitoring and assessment, environmental analysis, environmental policy, disaster risk reduction and management, sustainable development, disaster management modeling and renewable energy technologies.

To provide research and educational opportunities for postgraduate students and consultancy services to industry, government and local communities as well as community development/outreach and capacity building.

To engage international stake holders in research and development of technologies that will contribute to sustainable development and enhanced quality of life.
